Women in the Military from High Heels to Combat Boots

Brigadier General Carol Elliott will be speaking to us about the history of women in the US military.

She grew up in Iowa and graduated from Iowa State University with a double major in international relations and political science.  She joined the Air Force and served as an intelligence officer for 28 years, 1973-2001, in Thailand, the Philippines, Utah, Germany, South Korea, Virginia, Italy, Hawaii, the Pentagon and Texas.  In her last few senior officer assignments, she directed NATO intelligence support for air operations over Bosnia; commanded a 2,700-person group responsible for Air Force intelligence activities in the Pacific; worked for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the Pentagon during the war in Serbia; and served as the Vice Commander of the Air Force’s 13,000-person intelligence agency.  When she retired in 2001, she ranked sixth among the nearly 66,000 women in the Air Force.
