Our Planet Needs Our Help
The 2025 Rotary International Convention in Calgary, Alberta, was inspiring and energizing. I had the privilege of meeting Rotarians from around the world and deepening my understanding of Rotary’s global humanitarian efforts. One highlight was learning about Rotary’s seventh Area of Focus - supporting the environment. This important focus area complements Rotary’s longstanding efforts in disease prevention, clean water, education, economic development, maternal and child health, and peace.
Environmental sustainability validates many of our Bozeman’s Sunrise club projects, from planting trees at Glen Lake Park, to installing solar panels, planting native vegetation, building school gardens and cleaning local waterways. This new area supports habitat restoration and education through pollinator gardens along with potential partners such as the Sacajawea Audubon Society and Montana Native Plant Society. With the environment now an official focus, such projects are eligible for Rotary Foundation Global Grants.
The Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group (ESRAG) supports clubs in planning and evaluating impactful environmental projects. ESRAG promotes climate action, biodiversity preservation, and pollution reduction. A valuable resource is The 7 Steps to a Climate-Friendly and Sustainable Rotary Club (2024) by Rotarian Michael Koch. https://esrag.org/blog/2025/04/07/the-path-to-a-sustainable-rotary/
One of the plenary speakers at the Rotary International Convention was Dr. Katherine Hayhoe, a climate scientist. She has inspired many Rotarians by speaking about how the Rotary Four-Way Test, of the things we think, say or do, can be applied to the issue of climate change covering:
- Is it the truth? This involves acknowledging the scientific reality of climate change, supported by decades of research.
- Is it fair to all concerned? The climate crisis is unfair to everyone. This prompts consideration of how climate change disproportionately impacts vulnerable populations and future generations.
- Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Engaging in respectful conversations about climate change, even with those who disagree, can foster understanding and build connections.
- Will it be beneficial to all concerned? This encourages finding solutions that benefit both individuals and the planet, such as investing in renewable energy or implementing energy-efficient practices. If we act, it will be more beneficial to everyone, everywhere, than anything else Rotary can do, by preserving the livability of our planet.
