Fishy Residents of Glen Lake

Montana's lakes are the stage for some fin-tastic performances by our native fish. Let's meet the stars of the show at Glen Lake Rotary Park.

Bluegill: The Sunny Buddy

  • Identification: Bluegills are like rays of sunshine with their blue and yellow coloring. Look for a black "ear" spot near their gills.
  • Diet: These sunfish are nibblers, feasting on aquatic insects, small fish, and even some tasty plants.

Yellow Perch: The Golden Glider

  • Identification: They're hard to miss with their golden bodies and striking black stripes. Yellow perch have a distinctive, well, perch-like shape!
  • Diet: Small invertebrates, insects, and even smaller fish make up their diet.

White Suckers: The Bottom Dwellers

  • Identification: White suckers are silvery-gray with fleshy lips on their undersides to slurp up food on the lake bottom.
  • Diet: Algae, plants, and tiny invertebrates are their munchies of choice.

Largemouth Bass: The Lake Legend

  • Identification: Largemouth bass have a distinctive wide mouth and a greenish hue with long dark stripes.
  • Diet: They're the top predators, dining on other fish, insects, and anything else that crosses their path.

Rainbow Trout: The Colorful Acrobat

  • Identification: Known for their vibrant rainbow colors, they're easily recognized by their pink stripe running along their side.
  • Diet: Aquatic insects, small fish, and the occasional crustacean make up their menu.

Fishy Facts to Reel You In

Here are some fin-tastic tidbits about these Montana natives:

  • Largemouth Lurkers: Largemouth bass are ambush hunters, lurking in the shadows before striking.
  • Rainbow's Color Change: Rainbow trout are known to change color depending on their mood, environment, and even the time of year.
  • Sucker Surfers: White suckers have a knack for swimming against strong river currents.

KIDS FISHING DAY - FREE FOR ALL!

Learn how to fish at our annual Kids Fishing Day on the third Saturday in May. The event runs 9am to 12pm at Glen Lake Rotary Park and is free for all kids and parents.

Both adults and kids will enjoy snacks, lunch, and prizes!

No Fishing Gear? No Problem!

We have plenty of loaner fishing poles. Our expert volunteers will teach kids about baiting lines, catching and releasing fish, untangling lines, and more.

Check in between 9–10am. Fishing starts when the horn blows at 10am sharp. Fishing ends at 12pm, when lunch is served on the patio. Kids and adults await the anticipation of potentially winning a prize in our raffle drawing.

It’s a fun time watching happy kids enjoying themselves at our natural playground at the park.

Visit our club calendar for more information about Kids Fishing Day in May.
